SURVEYING SPACE-TIME WITH Frank Caffey

[attr="class","mempmain"]

the desert was a place that memphis was becoming progressively familiar with. it was where he spent most of his off time as of late, looking at for ruins.[break][break]

specifically he was looking for anything to do with regigias.[break][break]

there were rumors saying that he was put on the earth by arceus in order to keep order. but how could he keep order if he was slumber? was he put to sleep or did he go to sleep on purpose?[break][break]

these questions circled around in his head over and over again, brain trying to make sense of it. could he? no, not without some murals to go off of at least![break][break]

which was why he was wandering the desert with a pair of goggles and a bandana over his face. he'd found shelter in some rock formations for the time being; which is when he felt everything get all ... strange.[break][break]

the world warbled around him. the space distortion that was appearing literally happening and startling him. he'd never entered one before and it caused him to jump. the sand and ruin around him suddenly a vast and beautiful, lush, green area. his eyes marveled, confusion took his features; but that's when it dawned on him.[break][break]

"... oh wow, really?" had he truly entered a space time distortion on accident?? so him.

At first glance, Hoenn's desert was similar in nature to the Ultra Desert. Yet unlike that vast realm of mystery and danger, this one was familiar at an intrinsic level. Here, the laws of physics and sense still ruled.[break][break]

Perhaps that was what drew Frank to the desert on that particular day. Dressed like a tourist, he strolled through a ruined hallway. Crumbling murals flanked him on either side. Some distance away, his rented all-terrain vehicle waited, his driver enjoying the pleasures of air conditioning.[break][break]

"Take pictures of these and send them to @albrecht," Frank instructed his Rotom, Duke, who had possessed his phone. It floated closer to a mural, the clicking sound of a camera shutter filling the air as it obeyed its trainer's command.[break][break]

As Frank turned to proceed down the hallway, the air warped with a purple haze. Electricity crackled, and the sharp scent of ozone invaded his nostrils. The man whirled around, eyes wide with alarm. He had read accounts of space-time distortions, but he'd never been inside one before. How exciting![break][break]

And who was that? Frank squinted down what had been the corridor of a ruin but was now a lush, green landscape.[break][break]

"Memphis?" he called out, incredulous, upon recognizing the younger man.

Hearing his name causes Memphis to look up curiously. When he lays eyes on a familiar head of silver, he gives a warm smile. All anxious nerves are tucked away so that the public world cannot see them.[break][break]

He is poised, he is prepared.[break][break]

”Frank!” The archivist doesn’t even realize his excitement is abundant in the way he says Frank’s name. ”It’s so good to see you again! I wasn’t sure I ever would.”[break][break]

But then again, who would? They’d met in a wild route and hadn’t really talked since. Didn’t even exchange numbers.[break][break]

Making his way over, he is near Frank and can see the walls that the rotom is snapping picks of. It has his eyes nearly turning into literal stars.[break][break]

”Oh wow! Look at that… do you know where they’re from, or what they pertain to?”

"Good to see you too!" Frank said, beaming once he confirmed the other person was, in fact, Memphis.[break][break]

They hadn't met since the trek up to Rustboro City. Frank had mentioned visiting the museum where Memphis worked, but he couldn't remember the name of it or where it was, so he'd dropped the idea. Museums weren't exactly what he considered a good time, anyway.[break][break]

"I have no fucking clue," Frank admitted when asked about the murals. "I just have a professor friend who loves old stuff like this, but he can't go out much. His health's not great. So I thought, let me take some photos for him, you know?"[break][break]

Anything to take Frank out of the boredom of routine and into something new and exciting. And this space-time distortion definitely fit the latter description.[break][break]

"What's happening, anyway?" he asked, peering up at the purple dome and the storm clouds brewing overhead. Lightning flashed and thunder boomed. "You ever been in one of these before?"

Many shades of emotion crossed Memphis’ face. From being excited to see Frank, to a small lament at the idea of him having a friend with an illness that kept them locked away and unable to explore, to thinking it super ironic that one of the workers at the museum was the exact same way, to then putting a hand over his head and looking up at the dome.[break][break]

And there’s fifty shades of Memphis’ thoughts, just for you.[break][break]

”Nope.” His answer is quick, almost rehearsed, but he really hasn’t ever seen anything like it before. ”But it’s cool, huh?”[break][break]

There he goes beaming like an Arceus-damned nerd.[break][break]

”I’ve worked around a lot of ruin stuff, but this is new to me. Actually, could you send those pictures to me as well? If it’s not too much trouble. I’d like to try and decipher them at some point.”

Taking his phone out, he begins scrolling through his contacts to find the ‘me’ contact every phone has.[break][break]

”Sorry, it’s a new number, I haven’t got it memorized yet.”

One of Frank's many skills that helped him climb the corporate ladder was his ability to read people. A necessary skill, it helped him know how to respond to them, how to curry their favor.[break][break]

He read the many emotions flickering across Memphis' face like a book but maintained an oblivious, amiable smile.[break][break]

"Sure! Happy to send theem along. Oi, Duke, get over here."[break][break]

Frank waved for his Rotom, who floated the phone up to its trainer's side. He took the device in his hand. As he pulled open the new contact screen, Duke exited the phone and zipped circles around the two men.[break][break]

A Hisuian Samurott materialized nearby, emerging as if from nothing thanks to the energy of the distortion. Duke buzzed in alarm, electricity DISCHARGING at the sea lion.[break][break]

Frank's Pokémon were not trained for battle, so unless Memphis' were, the explorers needed to leave, and quickly.

Memphis was not nearly as wrapped up in the contact name thing as Frank was. Instead, he had heard the distortion make a warble and lifted his gaze. When he saw the form of a pokémon, he instinctively lifted his hand to grab at a capsule. The one specifically containing his porygon.[break][break]

Once released, the porygon took one look at the creature and collected the discharged energy from the rotom to fire it’s own zap canon. As it did, Memphis thought they made it out pretty lucky and furrowed his brows in mild concern.[break][break]

”M-Maybe we should get safe first, then do the numbers thing.”

Frank looked up to see his Rotom and Memphis' Porygon attempting to drive back the aggressive Samurott. He gave an eager nod in agreement. "Yeah, let's do that."[break][break]

His eyes darted around, taking quick stock of their surroundings.[break][break]

"Before the world got all purple-y, my driver was over there." He pointed west, toward a wall of the distortion that glitched and jumped like old computer graphics. "If we run fast enough and far enough, we should be able to reach him. Right?"[break][break]

He didn't wait for confirmation. Shoving his phone into his back pocket, Frank reached for Memphis' without giving the action a second thought. If the younger man allowed it, Frank would wrap his fingers around Memphis' thin wrist, then lead him in that direction.[break][break]

Duke continued to DISCHARGE electricity at the Hisuian Pokémon, staying close to the humans until they reached what seemed like the edge of the distortion. Hesitantly, Frank swiped at the barrier with his free hand. His fingers passed through with ease.[break][break]

"Here we go!" Holding his breath as if he were underwater, which made no sense, he charged through the barrier with Memphis in tow.

The battle makes Memphis a little squirmy. He's just not used to it. Every time he was challenged he usually told people 'no thank you' and walked away. To see his porygon help the rotom take care of the samurott did have a sense of pride welling in Memphis' chest...or was that anxiety?[break][break]

Probably anxiety.[break][break]

No fuss was given when his wrist was taken. He's pulled along and follows Frank out of the distortion. As his porygon makes its way through with the rotom, Memphis finally allows his shoulders to relax. They're safe.[break][break]

"That was close... pokémon just, pop outta the ground like sunflora in those things, huh?"[break][break]

All he could think was the chaos that would take place if a distortion like that opened up in a town.

They emerged from the space-time distortion to find the desert exactly as it was beforehand. Frank glanced back at the dome of hazy purple energy, already wondering what else might have happened had he stayed. Perhaps if he found one again, but went with someone whose Pokémon were trained for battle…[break][break]

A car honk pulled Frank from his musings. Some yards away, the all-terrain jeep he'd rented for the day sat, unaffected by the phenomenon. The driver he'd paid had rolled the window down and was yelling, asking if they were all right.[break][break]

"We're fine, thanks!" Frank called back. Then he turned to Memphis. "I guess so. It's probably not safe to stay here since I don't know how long these things last. Want to hitch a ride back to Mauville City?"[break][break]

Frank jerked his thumb toward the jeep.

The return of his porygon came first, because the thing would just keep zapping without mercy if he didn't. Then he looked to the driver and even gave a wave. It was a wave filled with awkward and confused curiosity.[break][break]

Once Frank addressed him, his attention is back front and center with the man who still has a hand around his wrist. Memphis didn't think about the way it looked until there were another set of eyes to think about; until there were, in his opinion, appearances to uphold.[break][break]

So he swallowed thick and reminded himself he wasn't in Sinnoh and that his dad wouldn't think anything or scold him because he wasn't even in the bloody region let alone the Arceus forsaken desert.[break][break]

"Um... yeah, sure." All confidence from before has been lost and is replaced instead with a bit of shyness, which shows in a faint tint to his cheeks. If asked, he'd blame the weather.[break][break]

"I could use the lift."

Frank hardly seemed to notice that he was still holding Memphis' wrist, and released it just as casually as he'd taken it. His violet eyes did notice the way the younger man's sudden flush, but he said nothing. The heat, perhaps.[break][break]

"Great! Oh, hey, maybe we can stop by a place to get something nice and cold to drink. This desert is killing me!" Frank said, chatty as always. He recalled his Rotom into a Pokéball and started off toward the jeep, his hands in his pockets.[break][break]

Upon reaching the vehicle, Frank opened one of the back doors so Memphis could enter first, then climbed inside after him. As soon as the air conditioning hit him, he relaxed against the seat with a dramatic sigh of contentment.[break][break]

"Back to Mauville," he told the driver. The vehicle lurched forward and started making its way through the dunes. Frank, meanwhile, took out his phone again. "So, your email? So I can send you these photos," he said to Memphis.

The desert heat had certainly been the reason for the blush. Yep. That's what Memphis was deciding as he pulled his shirt collar out and fanned himself after getting into the back of the vehicle.[break][break]

Being the rather scrappy little dunce he was, the moment the car lurched forward Memphis let out a squeak and gripped any part of the vehicle he could. He happened to land on Frank's hand and flinched away immediately, giving an apologetic smile and a nervous chuckle.[break][break]

"S-sorry. Still shaken up about the distortion, I think."[break][break]

And still dying of heat. To avoid any further idiocy, so he deemed it, he pulled his phone out and unlocked it, handing it to Frank.[break][break]

Being that he was literally a saint in training not too long ago, the most Frank'll find if he goes looking is some fanfiction that people deem spicy. Some browser history supporting that fanfiction somewhere in the danbooru land, and a shit ton of anything having to do with ruins. Yep, that's about it.[break][break]

"Thanks again for the photos. I wanna show them to my boss."[break][break]

Maybe GIDEON GRAVES could make sense of them, or see if the murals were something they'd established before or not.

Frank had expected Memphis to spell out his email address so Frank could enter it into his phone. Instead, Memphis shoved his own phone into Frank's hands. It was a different model, so Frank took a few minutes to find the email app and enter his information.[break][break]

In the process, he did indeed accidentally see a window open to an explicit drawing of two-dimensional men in compromising positions.[break][break]

Though Frank did not make any outward indication he'd seen the picture, he did shift in his seat. The mere thought of young, sweet-looking Memphis browsing such images triggered an animal instinct in him.[break][break]

With a phone in each hand, Frank finished sending Memphis the photos by email. Then he handed Memphis' phone back to him. "There. All done. Hopefully that can help you out at the museum."[break][break]

The jeep bumped its way across the dunes.[break][break]

"I also put in my number in case you wanna meet up in less… uh, dangerous places," he added, flashing Memphis a sly grin and a wink.
